Start a Start-up?

Heyyyyyyy, how are you doing???

I know you probably don’t really care about which science courses I’m taking this semester but I felt like sharing a bit of an alternative course I decided to take. Stepping away from my usual scientific choices, I am coursing “commercializing science”. The course explores the intersection of science and business and uncovers the possibilities and challenges of bridging these two concepts.

Nice ehhhhh? 😉

Well, last week we explored the world of startups. I had a ton of readings to go through, and usually, just the thought of opening an essay gets me dreaming of a long nap. But guess what? I stumbled upon the first essay that didn’t feel like torture. (If you are by any chance my IB English language and literature teacher, read the footnote).

So, here it is “How to start a startup” and here I go:

Dear Paul Graham, I don’t know you and probably will never meet you but man, THANK YOU. You not only got me to read a whole essay without complaining about life, but you got me reading your WHOLE blog.

This essay has too many quotes I loved for instance:

  • Don’t force things; just work on stuff you like with people you like.
  • Some people could probably start a company at 18 if they wanted to.
  • If you’re thinking, I don’t care what he says, I’m going to start a company now, you may be the sort of person who could get away with it.
  • “What matters is not ideas, but the people who have them. Good people can fix bad ideas, but good ideas can’t save bad people.”

You get me right? I know. This man should be a motivational speaker.

Well, I don’t want to push anyone into starting a startup. My intention is quite the opposite. After realizing just how complicated the process can be, I felt inspired to show my support for some of my favourite startups. I believe it’s a fantastic way to stay motivated and encourage these amazing ventures.

I myself started with “prettfyuldreams” which I now reduced to an Instagram page, personal shipment and some street market events after a year and a half on the European online market. I moved out. I started uni. I focused on other things. I miss it, lmao.

One of my best friend’s twin brother started KAPITA and I find it incredibly cool:

I loved the way takkra works, they take super personal care of their customers and show their passion towards their business IN EVERY SINGLE PACKAGE THEY SELL:

AND WELL AS TAKKRA SAYS; TAKE THAT RISK.

If you or your friends have a startup, PLEASE leave a comment with the name or a link. I WANT TO SEE IT!!!!

Footnote:

Dear Ms. Smitheram,
I know it may come as a surprise to you, (honestly, I can hardly believe it myself)—I have a blog, and I write in English! I want to thank you, as it is solely thanks to your teaching that I learnt English. I now feel more confident than during IB ( a bit of a pity cause I would have nailed my final exam), but I truly wanted to thank you.

Warmest regards,

Marta
